Itajiki Valley, Otaki Waterfall in Itajiki Valley

Otaki Waterfall is located in the Itajiki Valley, further up from Shosenkyo Takiue. Legend has it that water containing dissolved crystal flows down this mystical waterfall, which is also a famous power spot. Even now, crystal shards can be found in the vicinity of Itajiki Valley.
The two-level waterfall has a drop of around 30 m. It is possible to go close to the waterfall and feel the waterfall’s spray on your skin. Here you can see expressions of the changing seasons such as fresh green leaves in early summer and colorful autumn foliage. The waterfall can also sometimes freeze in winter, becoming an icefall. Itajiki Valley’s walking trail has been improved to make it easier to traverse, but there are also some slippery patches, so we recommend wearing sneakers or other shoes appropriate for mountain climbing.

Kanazakura-jinja Shrine

In the late Edo Period, a jeweler called Yasuke of Tamaya, who manufactured and sold crystals in Kyoto, conveyed crystal processing techniques to the priests of Kanazakura-jinja Shrine when he came here to buy crystals. This is thought to have been the beginning of Kofu’s subsequent development as a “Jewel Town.” The “Spheres of Fire and the Spheres of Water” crystals that were found in this area and polished are sacred treasures of Kanazakura-jinja Shrine, where you can also have your stamp book stamped with the shrine’s enormous crystal seal.

Crystal Road

With the discovery of crystal in Shosenkyo Gorge long ago, gem-polishing techniques and culture developed in the area and Shosenkyo Gorge became a sacred place for gemstones. For this reason, there are many gemstone stores in the area, which became known as the “Crystal Road.” We also recommend taking a stroll along the Crystal Road, which is lined with restaurants and a variety of shops.

Mitake Soba noodles

Mitake soba noodles originated long ago when local residents would make soba noodles for shugenja (mountain monks) from around Japan travelling to visit the Main Shrine of Kanazakura-jinja Shrine, and these noodles eventually became famous as “Mitake Soba.” Be sure to try Mitake Soba noodles made with pure water obtained in the Shosenkyo Gorge area.

At the end of the Edo Period, Osada Enemon of Ikari Village built the current walking trail (new path) for transporting crystal and other goods to Kofu, contributing greatly to Shosenkyo Gorge’s development. There are also rare gemstones, carvings, and other products that give you a sense of history and tradition. Inside the facility you can also experience crystal-polishing under the guidance of certified craftsmen.
